2018 Harvest Update

“The best thing one can do when it’s raining is to let it rain.”

– Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

With a wet start to the Spring, it has been another interesting growing season. Mid-Atlantic farmers fought an uphill battle with malting barley this year, but the first samples are arriving at the malthouse for testing! 2018 wheat, rye, and oat harvest samples will shortly follow. Buckwheat, sorghum, and triticale will not be harvested until later this year.

Did you know we provide FREE grain analysis to farmers producing malting barley or any other small grains? Our experienced team can also provide valuable crop management, storage and variety selection advice. If you have questions or grew grain you would like to malt, PLEASE Contact us!

This fall look for the return of sorghum to our specialty malt ingredient lineup, as well as a few exciting new non-barley specialty malts. Every year we make a little more progress with local farmers, agronomists and seed companies to grow new varieties and ancient grains for commercialization. Malt innovation is not born from the dream; it is born from the struggle!

Stay tuned for more harvest updates.
